This piece is the consequence of developing a sculpture—a sleeping couple—while reading an artist’s biography—Gustave Klimt.  It occurred to me that I could use small pieces of richly colored wood—left over from previous sculptures—to achieve a Klimt-like patterned background.  See Klimt’s Kiss or Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer for the examples I had in mind.  The sleepers are sculpted from big-leaf maple; the base is also big-leaf maple.  The bedcover, sheet and pillows were assembled and carved from seventeen other hardwoods.  Finished with 22K gold leaf and acrylic polyurethane.
