Masha and Spike

This sculpture was inspired by Jim Croce’s 1973 song Roller Derby Queen.  Women's Flat Track Roller Derby is a fun spectator sport with lots of action.  Croce’s love-interest in the song is a “five foot six and two fifteen bleached blonde mama with a streak of mean… Built like a ‘fridgerator with a head”, named “Spike”.
This is a segmented sculpture -- each different color is a separate piece of wood carved and fitted together.  The woods used include bleached holly, maple, ash, bloodwood, purple heart, canary wood, mesquite and ebonized Brazilian ebony.  The base is stained and ebonized eucalyptus.  The piece is finished with aniline dyes and acrylic polyurethane
